Domestic Garden

Suggest the optimal garden design to the client based on the client's requirement.

The Project “Domestic garden” aims to work from

the baseline of the client’s needs and expectations and 
overlay this contemporary thinking about landscape and

garden design. The project requires designing a series

of garden spaces for a domestic client, Writtle University

College (WUC) staff living in one of the WUC properties

on campus.

The design site for the project is located right next to the

student residential hall called Strutt, on campus.  

Concept and design process

Client brief

1 . More green spaces in the garden  

2. Plots for growing vegies and herbs

3. Easy accessibility to the muddy land. 
4. Keep greenhouse and need a shed for storage

5. Shade and seating area  

6. Get rid of view from the residential hall, Harvey

7. Need individual space for drinking, reading books, or socializing
8. Open space but not too enclosed

9. Bringing wildlife such as birds or bees to the garden
10. Keep the pond and grassy area around it to be controlled

11. Remove magnolia tree due to damage to the roof

Planting strategy

The planting strategy is based on the client's requirement that plant selections should attract wildlife to the garden such as insects and birds and be safe to the client's dogs. So, planting selection prioritizes its harmless characteristic and wildlife attraction.
